Herb Neumann
took the lead from pole-sitter Wayne Anderson on lap 54, after waging a nose-to-tail
battle with Anderson for the first half of the event. Several attempts by
Neumann to make an inside pass were unsuccessful, forcing him to execute an
outside power move on lap 53 to take the lead from series point leader Anderson
at the stripe. Neumann pulled away from the field at that point, building a
commanding five-second lead while Anderson and Steve Dorer dueled for second
and third. Dorer finished second, followed by Anderson, Scott Grossenbacher,
and Rob Partelo.
Further back
in the pack, series Rookies Randy Anderson and Austin Kirkpatrick fought
furiously for Rookie-of-the-Race honors, with Kirkpatrick moving to seventh
place on lap 65 to get the honors. Kirkpatrick padded his lead in the Rookie
points, while Anderson finished eighth in the event.
The race was
slowed by four cautions, with the most serious incident being Russ Shaw’s lap
61 collision with the third turn wall. .
